Are you interested in exploring multiple areas of study? Do you have varied interests and are not sure if you can combine them?  Maybe an interdisciplinary major is the right fit for you.

The wonderful part of studying an interdisciplinary major is that you can combine multiple fields of study and create a more holistic and versatile educational experience.

Three examples of popular interdisciplinary majors are cognitive science, international studies, and environmental science.

Cognitive Science

Cognitive Science explores the nature of thought, learning, and intelligence.  It examines how the mind processes information, the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive functions, and the development of artificial intelligence.

With classes in psychology, biology, neuroscience, computer science, linguistics, philosophy, and anthropology, cognitive science students can explore the study of the human mind and brain, focusing on how the mind represents and manipulates knowledge.

With a degree in cognitive science, a student can pursue careers in the fields of machine learning, human-centered (UX) design, software design/development, medical analysis, artificial intelligence, linguistic analysis, and marketing.  Many cognitive science majors are also pre-medicine or pre-law students.

International Studies

An international studies major provides a comprehensive understanding of global issues, international relations, and the cultural, political, economic, and social dynamics that shape the world. The curriculum for the major includes topics such as international politics, global economics, cultural studies, and the impact of globalization on societies.

As an international studies major, a student would take classes in political science, economics, history, sociology, anthropology, and foreign languages. These courses will provide students with a broad perspective on global affairs and prepare them for careers in a variety of fields including diplomacy, international business, law, journalism, non-governmental organizations, and academia. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the degree, graduates in international studies will also have skills applicable across various sectors.

Environmental Science

An environmental science major focuses on understanding the complex interactions between the natural environment and human societies.  Students learn about ecological systems, environmental policy, sustainability practices, and the social implications of environmental issues. The curriculum will include a combination of biology, chemistry, physics, geography, sociology, economics, and political science and prepare a student to study environmental problems from a scientific perspective.  A career in environmental science will equip you with the knowledge and skills to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time.

A major that is interdisciplinary in nature can help you personalize your educational experience by choosing to study material from two or more disciplines.  So, if your interests are varied, follow your passions and see where your interests intersect.  An interdisciplinary major may be a perfect fit!
