College Tuition Increases Loom Over Students’ Minds
In a recent article from Bloomberg News, in 2014, tuition and fees at 4-year public colleges and private colleges have risen from around 3 percent to 3.7 percent. For an in-state student at a public college, tuition with room and board can come up to $18,943 and at private colleges, the cost comes up to around $42,419.
In related news, a chart from the Bureau of Labor Statistics displays an increasingly-widening gulf between the change in price of child care and tuition and change in median income.
For more specific numbers, according to a table from the U.S. Department of Education:
- Around 1990, the tuition with room and board at a 4-year public college was about $9,374
- In 2011-2012, the cost had increased to $16,789
- Both numbers above were calculated with the value of constant 2011-2012 dollars
Adding to those facts, with recent news of UC tuition increases, what can students do to prepare for college costs?
During the college search, students should certainly take into account college tuition and the cost of room and board. Students should also research in-depth on financial aid and scholarships.
