How Can Parents Help in the College Applications Process? (now with Vlog )

by Jennifer L.

Applying to college has become much more complex than in the past when parents applied.  It can have a stressful impact on students with performance expectations and making all the “right” decisions for admission into their dream college.

The most important role for parents and guardians in the college application process is one of SUPPORT.  Here are some ideas for providing that support to your student:

1. Set a family meeting to discuss what your student knows and doesn’t know about the college application process and their college goals. Try not to talk about college all the time or the process can become overwhelming. It should be an exciting time, not stressful.

2. Encourage downtime for your student to slow down and reflect. A successful application is one that reflects integrity and character.  Take time to discuss passions and interests, as well as the purpose behind decisions.

3. Be a positive motivator to keep your student organized. Encourage your student to develop a system that works for them to manage timelines and deadlines.

4. Let your student make appointments and write emails to teachers, as well as high school and college administrators. High-performing students no doubt have limited time, but these are steps towards independence and tools they need to be successful in college.  Administrators and counselors can recognize unauthentic pieces of writing!

5. Visit college campuses. If you cannot travel to campuses that are top of the list, visit campuses nearby.  Discuss with your student what they like and dislike.  What students don’t like about a campus, is just as important as what they do like.

6. Be honest with your child about the family’s financial parameters. If there is a limited budget, discuss what is affordable so the planning process can address this issue.  There are many options for students with limited budgets.  It is important to start planning early to take advantage of these opportunities.

7. Students’ ideas and thoughts change all the time as they learn, grow, and develop through their high school years.  These changes dictate the college planning path.
