Math Enrichment Workshop: Problem-Solving Skills
Grades: 10th-12th
Dates: Saturday 10:00am-12:00pm
From October for 5 Saturdays
Cost: $300
Learn how to go above the basics and improve your problem-solving skills on all kinds of math problems from algebra to calculus! The workshop is run by Dr. Eva Zabric, who has over a decade of math teaching experience.
Mentor & Math Tutor, Dr. Eva Zabric
Eva earned both her MS and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1992. Since then, she has held teaching positions at many colleges and universities across the country, with her last 18 years spent as an instructor at SJSU. Past courses she has taught include: algebra, trigonometry, finite mathematics, pre-calculus, calculus, differential equations, discrete mathematics, statistics, and linear algebra.
In her almost 30 years of experience teaching and offering one on one help and guidance to her students, Eva has developed a great deal of insight into the different ways that students think. As a result, she offers a wide range of step-by-step approaches to problem solving, catered to the individual learning style.
Workshop 1: Equations
Workshop 2: Absolute value and inequalities
Workshop 3/4: Trigonometry; trigonometric identities, unit circle, right triangle
Workshop 5: Functions; basics, graphing, reading from a graph
Sample Problem: A circle of radius 1 is placed on an incline where point P on the circle, has coordinates (-5, -5). The circle is rolled up the incline, and once the circle hits the origin, the circle is then rolled horizontally along the x-axis to the right. What is the x-coordinate of the point where P touches the incline or the x-axis for the fifth time (not including the starting point)?
