My Experience of UCSF as a Med Student
by Shiv G.
I’m right in the thick of my second year at UCSF, and let me tell you, it’s a ride. I thought it might be helpful to share what this stage of medical school really looks like—a series of significant shifts that shape who we become as future physicians. So, here’s a peek into my world, hoping it gives you a real taste of what’s in store at this stage of the medical school road.
The Beginning of Clinical Exploration
Imagine diving into the fascinating world of medicine, dissecting complex diseases, and uncovering the secrets of the human body. That’s what the second year at UCSF is all about! We spend hours deciphering lectures, collaborating with classmates, and embracing the excitement of unraveling the mysteries of human anatomy and diseases.
But it’s not all about books and lectures! We also get hands-on experience by working with real patients. The second year of medical school ushers in a transition from preclinical classroom courses to clinical rotations after winter break, a demonstration of a recent trend at many top medical schools like UCSF to incorporate clinical experience earlier on in the curriculum. Under the guidance of incredible mentors, we learn to listen to heartbeats, understand medical histories, and even interpret diagnostic tests. These interactions teach us not just about illnesses but also about the importance of empathy and human connection in healing.
The Power of Community
One of the coolest parts of my journey at UCSF is the amazing community here, which has especially been developed now that we’ve had a year together below our belt. We’re like a big family, supporting each other through tough times and celebrating our victories together. Whether it’s solving a tricky medical case or just needing a friendly chat, there’s always someone around to lend a hand or a listening ear.
Looking Forward
As my preclinical work comes to an end, I’m filled with excitement for what’s next. The road ahead might be challenging, but every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Armed with the knowledge and experiences from UCSF, I can’t wait to dive deeper into the world of medicine and start to make a real difference in people’s lives, instead of just reading theoretical clinical vignettes.
So, to all of you other future medical students out there, remember, the journey to becoming a healer is filled with hard work, support from your community, and endless opportunities to learn and explore. Who knows, maybe someday I’ll be reading about your incredible medical school adventures too!
