My Medical Journey and Nurturing Empathy & Expertise
by Shiv G.
In this blog post, I’ll discuss my personal journey and insights gained so far in my medical school career and hopefully assist other future doctors in understanding what the journey will entail.
How the Journey Began
My fascination with medicine started in a way that might sound familiar. Personal health challenges, volunteer work in clinics, and clinical research – these experiences ignited a deep desire within me to make a difference in people’s lives.
Educational Pursuits
Oddly enough, my favorite subjects in high school were as diverse as they come. I certainly enjoyed biology, understanding life at the cellular level.
But, surprisingly, I was equally or even more passionate about history and mathematics (which were later my college majors). What struck me was the realization that medicine is not just a scientific pursuit—it’s an art that encompasses empathy, communication, and problem-solving. Medical schools appreciate diverse backgrounds, so I chose a field where I could excel and enjoy the learning process. Additionally, I don’t recommend shying away from liberal arts courses—they enhanced my communication skills, a vital aspect of patient care.
College also provided me with a plethora of research and internship opportunities. From clinical research in HIV to volunteering in community health programs, these experiences deepened my understanding of medicine’s societal impact and broadened my perspectives. My college education laid the foundation for critical thinking and problem-solving. The rigorous coursework prepared me for the challenges of medical school.
Moreover, my extracurricular activities and internships honed my interpersonal skills, making me not just a capable doctor but a compassionate healer.
Advice for Future Healers
To aspiring doctors, my advice would be to cultivate curiosity. Explore various fields within medicine through volunteering, shadowing, or internships. Embrace your passion but also remain open to diverse experiences; you might discover your niche in unexpected places. I’ve recently been exploring psychiatry, which was never on my radar before I started medical school. I expect to have multiple other journeys and periods of exploration going forward.
I was genuinely surprised by the profound emotional impact of patient interactions. It’s not just about diagnosing diseases; it’s about connecting with people during vulnerable moments. The ability to empathize and communicate effectively is as crucial as medical expertise.
The medical school journey is not just an education; it’s a transformative odyssey shaping students into empathetic, skilled, and resilient healthcare providers. I am eager to face the challenges ahead, armed with knowledge, compassion, and the unwavering spirit of healing.
