Tutoring Subject: Essay Writing I
IntroductionOur English and Writing program for junior high school students will show them how writing can be fun while also giving them the educational foundation necessary to succeed in high school English classes and standardized testing. By exercising their creativity and mastering the rules of argument and essay structure, our students will develop advanced writing skills and gain a competitive edge in their next grade level.
Program Content
Students will learn how to establish and introduce their topics, organize their ideas, craft a thesis, write and revise a first draft, edit and proof-read their final draft, identify sources, use quotations, build a bibliography, conduct research, and use proper sentence structure, word choice, and grammar. They will learn how to write the basic essay structures that will be required of them in high school and the SAT, such as the five-paragraph format, the persuasive essay, the book report, the narrative essay, the comparison and contrast essay, and the biographic essay. Students will achieve these learning goals by practicing drills that will solidify their understanding of these topics and by completing writing projects that will teach them the process of creating a successful essay in many forms.
Tests and Homework
Students will be assigned creative writing projects daily and are expected to research, write, and revise at home. Practice and instructor feedback are critical to success in writing, and students will receive ample individual constructive commentary from their teacher on each of their homework assignments. Timed writing tests will be administered weekly to help students learn to pace their writing.
