What ‘Reach’ Schools Can You Include on a College List?
If you are a junior in high school, you might be thinking about your college list for next year. How many schools should you apply to? What schools do you have a good chance of being admitted into? And how many ‘reach’ schools should you include on your list? When including a reach school on a college list, there are 3 questions a student needs to answer:
1. Is my academic profile strong enough for me to know I can succeed at that college?
If a reach college does accept a student, the student will have to spend the next few years studying in a challenging college environment. This article on reach schools notes that: “For a student with a 2.7 GPA and a 25 on the ACT, Yale isn’t a reach college – it’s an impossible college.”
2.How does the reach school fit my goals?
The school might be selective, but how does it match up with your dream major or your preferred social environment?
3.What can I bring as a student to that reach school?
What makes you special as a student compared to others applying to that same school? A student must carefully plan their college visits to learn what they would add to that campus.
