Writers to Be Inspired by for Women’s History Month

by Kathleen M.

Women’s History Month started in 1980 as Women’s History Week and now is observed throughout the month of March. International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 – this is often a day off where women can celebrate their strength and solidarity.

It is always good to read widely and wildly so here are a few suggestions to get you started as you discover amazing women authors who are changing the way we think about the world all the time.

Amanda Gorman is a poet who became nationally famous when she read an inaugural poem in 2021.  She has a new children’s book out called Girls on the Rise

She mixes ideas about life and living and leaves readers filled with hope.  Watch her perform “We Rise” here.

Ursula K. Le Guin is a science fiction writer and American classic.  Her work has been regularly in print since 1968 and continues to find new readers.  Her work presents an alternate world which allows people to escape from the constraints of our current world – which is often the attraction of fiction.

Additionally, the field she chose to write in was a largely male world before she began to have success.  Watch the trailer for the PBS American Masters show on Le Guin to learn more.

Rebecca Solnit is a researcher and writer who has written 25 books.  Two recent books include Orwell’s Roses and Wanderlust.  She explores creativity, our lives on earth, history, and gender relations.  If you want a quick intro to her work and thinking, look for a TEDTalk to learn a little more.

Robin Wall Kimmerer is a professor, writer, scientist who writes about reciprocity in Nature. And helps us see how we could preserve the land we live on by partaking in more natural rhythms.

Her bestselling book, Braiding Sweetgrass, explores the gifts that are presented in nature and the opportunities we have to partake in them.

I hope you feel inspired by these authors and take time this month to learn about other women who are working in this world to improve it.
